Pediatric Physical Therapy
When is therapy helpful?
Pediatric Physical Therapy is a specialized field of physical therapy that focuses on helping children develop, recover, and maintain physical function and mobility. Pediatric physical therapists assess and treat infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents who experience a wide range of physical conditions that affect their ability to move, play, and participate in daily activities. These conditions may result from developmental delays, injuries, congenital disabilities, neurological disorders, or other medical conditions.

The goal of pediatric physical therapy is to enhance the child’s motor skills, strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility through tailored therapeutic interventions. Treatment plans are individualized, often incorporating play-based exercises, strengthening activities, stretches, and functional movements to improve physical skills and overall quality of life. Pediatric physical therapists work closely with parents, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals to create a supportive, holistic approach to the child’s care.

Conditions commonly addressed in pediatric physical therapy include:
-
Cerebral palsy
-
Developmental coordination disorder
-
Spina bifida
-
Torticollis (neck stiffness)
-
Down syndrome
-
Muscular dystrophy
-
Post-surgical rehabilitation
-
Sports-related injuries
-
Gross motor developmental delays

Pediatric physical therapy emphasizes early intervention, aiming to address issues as early as possible to promote better outcomes. Therapists use age-appropriate techniques and equipment, such as balance beams, exercise balls, and specialized toys, to engage the child and make therapy fun and effective. By working on physical capabilities, pediatric physical therapy can help children achieve greater independence, improve their participation in everyday activities, and maximize their overall development
